Transitioning with Grace

While technically summer isn't over for another two plus weeks, for most of us the transition to fall has already started. We celebrated Labor Day yesterday and most kids across the United States are back in school. We're starting to pull sweatshirts out of the closet to keep us warm in the cooler mornings and evenings here in Colorado. The sun is just barely starting to paint the sky, but hasn't come up over the hills across from us, when I blink my eyes open around 6:30 am. The House Wrens who raised their nestlings in the birdhouse by our deck have departed, and the activity at the hummingbird feeder has slowed down.

We're in a time of transition. The fun activites we planned throughout the summer have either been checked off the list or we sigh and say "maybe next summer" about those that we never got around to doing. Our schedules have been taken over by new projects, different sports, and school events (for those with kids). We view now as a time to get things done before the days are shorter and the snow starts to fall.

While I was teaching my last two SUP yoga classes for the season last weekend, John was chopping wood to fill our shed so we can get through the long winter living at 8,000 feet above sea level. I've shifted my focus from promoting my new book to planning for my upcoming retreats and workshops.

Whatever tasks are on your list, you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed and even a little sad that summer is in the rearview mirror. Just like the kids who are back in school, you might be experiencing the Sunday blues. Here are some tips to help get you through this time of transition.

  • Break larger goals down into manageable steps: completing incremental tasks will keep you motivated to reach your ultimate goal

  • Don't forget to take breaks and schedule time for self-care: pushing too hard and fast can lead to burnout or illness, so be sure to make time for things that nourish you and get enough sleep

  • Celebrate your accomplishments: when you check something off your list, take a moment of gratitude and give yourself credit for your achievement before moving on to the next thing

  • Incorporate stress management techniques that work for you: whether it's pausing to take a few deep breaths, meditating for 10 minutes in the morning, or taking a 15 minute walk in nature, do something every day that brings you a sense of calm and ease

Remember, transitions take time and can be challenging. Give yourself the gift of grace. Just as the butterfly struggles to emerge from the cocoon, you may experience moments of toil. But from effort, the butterfly builds strength in her wings so she can fly. Your hard work will prepare you for the next obstacle to be faced.
