Let's face it, life doesn't always go the way we plan. We may face roadblocks, challenges, upsets and redirects, which are all part of the journey. Each time things don't go our way, we have a choice to play the part of a victim, or we can uncover the lesson in the struggle, pick ourselves up, and carry on. We might find that we are even a little stronger and smarter as a result. I've written about this topic before, so check out this blog post for more.
What I want to focus on in this post are all those things that go right! I'm sure you've had times in your life when you felt on top of the world, like nothing could hold you back. Times that you were happy and fulfilled. My guess is that during those times you were surrounded by people you love, and/or you were doing something that lights you up! Those are the experiences I want to talk about today. I bet those times you remember the most fondly had more to do with who you were with and what you were doing versus a material possession. Am I right?
When we savor the experience over the "things" that we have, we are more content. In fact some of the best gifts that I've ever given or received were those of experiences, like tickets to an event or traveling to a place together. But it doesn't have to be big to be special, you can find opportunities to enjoy the experience of life in the every-day as well.
When we moved to Evergreen and my commute increased to an hour each way to teach some of my yoga classes, I started looking for ways to make my drive more enjoyable. Sometimes I listen to podcasts or books on Audible, other times I practice speaking Spanish. My most favorite way that I've found to make Mondays one of the best days of the week is to bring my dog, Mala, with me. She waits patiently while I teach class, and then we head over to the dog park nearby to jog or walk. I watch Mala run wild, play with other dogs, or run around with a stick. It makes my day. She's happy, I'm happy - it's a win-win! Then she keeps me company, riding shotgun, on the way home.
What's one thing that you can do in the next week to savor the experience? Comment below. Even better, share a picture with us on Facebook of you doing something that you love.
Life is short - make the most of the moments you have!
